On Saturday 13 April the Latin American Solidarity Centre in Dublin hosted an event titled “Poetry, Song and Struggle: One year of Resistance in Nicaragua”.  It was a cultural and information event to mark the resistance to the Ortega/Murillo regime and to honour the bravery of those continuing to protest in spite of state oppression.

Along with information about the repression in Nicaragua and eye witness accounts of the killings, arrests and intimidation, there was poetry, music and Nicaraguan folk dancing.

Two of the participants had been on stage with Daniel Ortega when he visited Dublin in May 1989.  They remembered the euphoria with which he had been greeted and expressed surprise and disgust at his turn to authoritarianism and violence.

About 65 people attended the event and you could have heard a pin drop when they listened to the testimony of two Nicaraguan refugees who had fled to Ireland.

The event finished with a rousing rendition of “Nicaragua Nicaraguita” and “Viva Leon Jodido!”.
